Stepping Out of Your Comfort Zone
I had this funny thing happen to me the other day. Well it’s funny now. I wanted to share it with you so you know that you are not alone going through your “stuff and that we are all living through times of trials and tribulations. It’s about stepping out of your comfort zone and moving your life forward and getting what you want.
Everyone goes through moments of not wanting to do certain things, things that make them uneasy or uncomfortable. Its human nature to want to stay where we are secure, where we know what is happening, not always wanting to learn something new. It’s the easy way out, it’s comfortable.
The story I am about to tell you turned out to be quite an “AHA moment for me. You see, it started out by me thinking that it would be fun doing something different for my coaching program. Since I am in the middle of creating a 28 Day Life Adventure program I wanted to record some videos to get the word out and begin marketing my services.
I set up my webcam, my lights and my room so everything was positioned perfectly and onto the first video we go. Well, one thing I quickly found out is that doing the videos are not as easy as they seem. Here are a few steps where the whole getting out of my comfort zone came into play.
1-Recording videos is not as easy as it looks. Takes time, takes a few takes (sometimes more than a few) and speaking to the camera is not as easy as speaking in person.
2- Video editing looks really cool but I know where my strengths are and where they aren’t. I know I don’t want to be a video editor when I grow up.
3- It takes TIME! Time to record, time for the retakes, time for the editing and when it actually comes time to post the videos, there are so many sites to post to if you want to do it right.
Now to continue with the story, I recorded several videos and said, ok these turned out pretty good, let’s get the editing started. Set up the laptop, got the program that THEY recommended that would be easy to use and a cup of tea and settled in, for what I thought, was going to be an hour or so worth of work.
6 ½ hours later, the program wouldn’t work the way I needed it to, the formats that the videos were being saved as were not recognized by anything on this planet and I was about to throw the computer out the window! Not bad for a coach! That is transparency 101 right there!
I stepped back, let it go and moved onto something simpler. Things slowly started to fall into place and now I’m back on track getting the videos complete and edited. Wow! Talk about being out of your comfort zone. I’m sure you can relate.
The most important thing about this whole story was to show you that you don’t have to be perfect at everything. You can’t be good at everything, though some of us can’t even relate to that concept. The fact is, just trying and giving it your best shot, no matter what it is, getting out of your comfort zone is the most important thing here.
You see, the day after this wonderful event occurred, I was speaking to my coach about it and he said, “Wow, not bad, only 6 ½ hours of your Ms. Perfectionist coming out. That is when we started to laugh.
I have been procrastinating on this video recording for 2 months because I didn’t have the right this, or that, my hair looked horrible (never heard THAT before) and it’s not the right time. The excuses grew and grew and my coaching program got further and further behind.
My questions to you are: “what is holding you back to getting what you want? Getting to where you want to be? Getting what you deserve? Now is the time to take action and move your life forward because if you don’t do it, who will? You have a choice, to move forward now or to stay where you are and just be content. The decision is yours to make.
Remember, giving up is not an option.
